Palatal expander (custom appliance)
A palatal expander is a gentle method of widening the upper jaw in children. It creates more space for the teeth, improves nasal breathing and helps avoid complex surgery in the future.
When we use the method:
for a narrow upper jaw and a “crowded smile”;
for crowded teeth and the risk of permanent teeth growing in incorrectly;
if the child snores or breathes through the mouth during sleep;
for a tendency to frequent colds and ENT conditions;
if speech is impaired due to a narrow palate.
What is it?
A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance fixed to the baby molars. It gently widens the upper jaw using a screw that the parents activate at home under the doctor’s supervision.
