Deep and light sedation (Propofol)
When fear or medical factors get in the way of dental treatment, the doctor may offer propofol sedation — you drift into a light “sleep”, breathe on your own, feel no pain and don’t remember the procedure, while we carefully monitor your condition.
The doctor may offer sedation if:
ordinary anaesthesia and nitrous oxide do not relieve fear and tension
complete stillness is required during complex operations (implantation, bone grafting)
a pronounced gag reflex or tongue spasms make access difficult
anatomical features interfere with safe treatment
What is propofol sedation?
Propofol sedation is the intravenous administration of a short-acting drug that temporarily switches off consciousness while preserving spontaneous breathing and protective reflexes. - Light sedation: you remain in a half-sleep and wake up easily. - Deep sedation: you are completely “switched off” and remember nothing of the procedure.

Stages of the procedure
Preparation:preparation. Taking the medical history, explaining all the steps and answering questions
INDUCTION:induction. Smooth administration of the drug and drifting into a light or deep sleep
TREATMENT:treatment. The dentist works without pain or movement, while the anaesthesiologist monitors all vital signs
AWAKENING:awakening. A gradual recovery from sedation and a short period of observation in the room until full recovery

Will I definitely wake up?
Yes. Propofol is eliminated quickly once its delivery stops, and you come round within 10–20 minutes.
Does it hurt?
No — the sedation is supplemented with local anaesthesia.
WHEN CAN I LEAVE?
After full awakening and the anaesthesiologist’s approval. It is advisable for someone close to you to drive you home.
