What is an impacted tooth and how is it removed?

An impacted tooth is a tooth that has not come through to the surface of the gum or has erupted only partially, sitting “at an angle” or lying on its side. Such teeth often remain hidden under the mucosa, creating “traps” for bacteria and pressure on the neighbouring teeth. The oral surgeon will carefully incise the gum, divide the tooth into fragments if necessary and remove the roots, minimising trauma to the bone and soft tissues.
